However, with enough extra time and a long weekend ahead, you might find that these games will have you skipping out on your friend’s social events. In fact, after a while, you might find yourself asking “who needs friends when you have Soap and Price at your side?”. So, if you’re looking for fun and addicting games that will take up a lot of life, then look to this list for the top offenders.

10. The Halo Series

Halo is probably one of those games that revolutionized online gaming as it took the old CS formula and translated that into consoles. At the same time, the first Halo game revolutionized the FPS genre altogether, introducing limited health and regenerating shields along with a strong and tight control scheme. Unfortunately, Halo 1 and 2 are the only games available on the PC, as the whole series maintains exclusivity with the Xbox.

9. Quake Live

The best thing about this game is that it is a pure expression of the FPS genre. There are no complicated stats to follow or improve, no overbalanced kill streak rewards, and there are no guns that have no difference between each other. Instead, the game is simply about shooting and skill because even when you get your hands on the various power-ups all over the level, you’ll still get shot. Quake features a lot of unique gameplay modes, and at times they seem even better than the ones you get in games today.

8. Skyrim

There’s a lot of things about this game that shouldn’t appeal to the mainstream crowd. First off, it is an RPG and while there is a huge following in the genre, it doesn’t usually breach into the common crowd. Second, it’s set in an ancient and mythic land with dragons, and that should spur a lot more gamers. On release though, this title spat in the face of convention and norm and became one of the most addicting titles to ever come out on all major consoles except the Wii. The combat was wildly fun, and the leveling was simple enough so that anyone could pick it up, but complex enough so that veteran gamers could make their characters just the way they want.

7. Far Cry 3

While this title was named “Skyrim but with Guns”, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that Skyrim with guns is Fallout 3. However, it did manage to nab a lot of attention for the vast map and expansive freedom each player had when starting a new game. Couple that with an unhinged story which put an emphasis on character development, and you would get a game that rivaled the fame of the RPG. You didn’t necessarily need to improve the player character much, but the vast amount of mods you could achieve with your gear was a fantastic element to spice up the game.

6. Dishonored

A lot of people complain about this game, and most of the time it’s the same problem. Dishonored is short, but people keep going back to play it anyhow. Featuring an easy to grasp stealth system, the ability to improve the player character’s weapons and powers, and a story that features conspiracy, it’s hard to see why this game wouldn’t be a hit. At the same time, the levels were small, but intricate, and one could even get lost in the streets of Dunwall.

5. Guild Wars 2

Critically this game is considered a gem among new MMOs. You see, Guild Wars has always had a habit of trying to change up the MMO landscape, and with this title, they managed to perfect old tropes, and make some new ones too. While there is a titanic fan base attached to this game, its still lacking a lot of support and is very under appreciated. There is no doubt though, that when you start a character, you’re going to end up leveling that character to the extreme.

4. The Mass Effect Series

While this game isn’t necessarily an addicting game when it came to the online element, it’s still considered one of the best among a lot of RPG nuts and mainstream gamers alike. However, for those that started the series way back in 2007, you’d find that a lot of them got so hooked that they stuck with the game for years. The title only reached its epic conclusion last year, but if you really want to feel the experience, you’ll have to find a way to buy the first two games.

3. World of Warcraft

3. World of Warcraft

At some point during WoW’s lifespan, the sheer number of users online was titanic. Fast forward to a few years later, and you still have a massive number of players visiting their alternate lives online. At the same time, those that got afflicted with the WoW virus ended up spending thousands of hours playing online, and that wasn’t because they needed to level up; it was because they made real friends in a world that didn’t exist. It was a world inside our own, and to this day gamers are still playing out their characters.

2. Battlefield

2. Battlefield

While this game lends itself to a more niche audience when it comes to the shooter genre, there’s no doubt that a lot of people found this niche awesome. You see, unlike arcadey shooters that riddle the gaming landscape, this title took a more realistic approach to the shooter genre. There were a lot of tactics that could be used in the game, and a lot of unique little quirks that still breached what should be called “realistic”. Other than that, you can probably check out the massive fan base it still has.

1. Modern Warfare

1. Modern Warfare

No game really breached the mainstream audience quite like the Modern Warfare series, and if you doubt that, just check out the countless lines formed just for this game’s midnight release. At the same time, there have been countless thefts done in the name of this game, which really shows you just how many people love this title. It also introduced the idea of twitch shooter because the online scene was so hardcore that trying to live past a minute would often result in your character’s death. If these little facts don’t show you just how addicting this title really is, why not go play a game and find out for yourself.
